Explanation of the current rules used for Tiger fish during competition.
Nwanyi Angling Club is proud of it's initiative around the 'Save the Tiger' project! The Club has started this program a few years ago where we seriously encourage all Tigers caught to be measured and safely released. The main drive behind the initiative is to keep our fish stock up in numbers to provide future generations the opportunity to experience catching the magnificent Tigers of the Zambezi.
The annual International Zambezi Classic angling competition has a unique set of rules considering the Tiger fish. It is a well know fact that Tigers don't survive well in live wells and rather perish very quickly. Thus defining the purpose of 'save the Tigers'.
Bringing Tiger to the Weigh-in Station:
Therefore a minimum weight of 5kg has been set for the 1st day of competition.
In other words only Tigers weighing in at more then 5kg's may be brought to the weigh station on Day 1.
On Day 2, only Tigers outweighing the second heaviest Tiger fish on Day 1 may be brought to the weigh station. This ensures that the majority of the large Tigers caught, gets put back into the river system and therefore helps conserving the species. The same rules apply for Day 3 of competition, only Tigers outweighing the second heaviest Tiger fish caught on Day 1 or Day 2 may be brought back to the weigh-in station.
This does not however mean that very few Tigers are being caught by the anglers on a daily basis. In fact it is to the contrast. But in angling it's all about the heaviest fish and therefore it's pointless in taking out Tigers from the river system that are smaller then what has already been weighed.
The Tigers also do not make out part of the species for the team competition (5 other species) but do come into consideration for the main prize and has a separate specie prize. Therefore if the heaviest Tiger wins the main price, the second heaviest Tiger takes the specie price and hence why we only weigh fish that are heavier then the second heaviest fish weighed on the previous days of competition.
This method has been proven to be very successful and numerous large Tigers have been released following this system. It also gives the angler the opportunity to be part of the 'save the Tiger' program.
The Club is currently running a pilot program that aims to be able to determine the mass of Tiger fish by using certain specific dimensions. If this program is successful, the Club and it's committee will strongly reconsider changing the current rules and regulations regarding the Tiger fish and hopefully be able to re-assign it at as a specie for the International Zambezi Classic.
